Export (People)

People has different export interfaces which allow you to export master data, result data or address data that are specific to a project or panel as well as projects, layouts and a lot of other information.

  • The manual “EFS Survey”, Chapter 14, explains how to export project-related records. This documentation also covers the export of result data from panel surveys.
  • The following explains the options for exporting the panelists’ master data or participant data as well as SPSS labels for master data.

Information

EFS can generate export files with up to 2 GB.

An effective export process into a variety of formats requires a few rather marginal modifications of the data:

  • Backslashes are removed.
  • The special characters \n (Newline), \t (Horizontal tab), \r (Carriage return) and " (Double quote) are removed as well.
  • NULL values are replaced by an empty string.

Exporting Master Data or Participant Data

Please proceed as follows:

  1. Switch to the People → Export menu.
  2. First, select the “Panel data” data type, and confirm by clicking on Next.

  3. Select the desired export template. Available options are:

    • Master data
    • Participant data
  4. In addition, you can restrict your export to categories, groups, panel statuses and, using selective export, to selected variables.

  5. Then, click on the Export button and reconfirm the export by clicking on Copy file to local PC on the following page.

  6. The download will begin. A pop-up window will open, in which you can choose to either open or save the file. Click on the Save button:

  7. A further dialog window will open, in which you can choose the folder you wish to save the file to. You can also rename the file. Confirm by clicking on Save.

  8. Once the download has been completed you can close the window by clicking on Close window.

Panel-Specific Setting Options in Detail

The basic settings and advanced options in the People → Export menu are essentially identical to the options that are described in detail in the manual “EFS Survey”. The following explains only the differences in export templates and restriction options.

Selecting an export template

The following export templates are available:

  • Master data: System data and master data.
  • Participant data: The data from the participant database.

Information

In the People → Export → Template editor menu, you can create and save your own export templates for panel data. This is particularly recommendable, if you frequently only export data for a selection of variables: You will not need to repeatedly select variables for selective export.

Restricting export to individual panelist groups

Instead of exporting the data of all panelists, you can only export the data of selected participants. You can apply the following restrictions:

  • Restriction to a group category.
  • Restriction to a panel group. The groups will only be available for selection after the respective category has been chosen.

Restricting export to panelists with a specific status

You can only export the data of panelists with a specific status. For example, you can export only the data of panelists with the “Admitted temporarily” status or data for all statuses except “Tester” and “Moderator”.

To do so, you should tick only the checkboxes for the desired statuses in the “Apply to panelists with status” row. By default, all the checkboxes are ticked.

Restricting export to selected variables

In the case of selective export, only selected variables will be exported. This option is particularly well suited for export processes that include master data because the amount of master data can quickly become unmanageable as the size of the panel increases.

You can, for example, export only variables that provide information on the sociodemographic structure of your panel: To do so, simply select the variables for age, gender and profession. Or you can export only the e-mail addresses from the address data.

To perform a selective export, you must tick the “Selective export” checkbox. Once you have confirmed the selection by clicking on the Export button, the list of possible variables will be displayed and you can choose those desired.

Creating SPSS labels for your own syntax jobs

If you choose the “SPSS labels for master data” option from the People → Export menu and confirm by clicking on Next, the export file will be in dat format, containing labels and variable names. These can be used for relabeling in SPSS, for example.
